Construction details of Helixstair

Helixstair is different from other spiral staircases. By machining a shoulder in solid stock, we have eliminated retaining collars on the balusters. The two lateral flanges on each welded tread which bear the cantilevered load are placed flush with the outside edge of the tread; this prevents any torsion in the tread surface and enforces the sculptural qualities of the design. The radiused flange at the outer edge of our solid top treads conceals the nut that fastens the baluster to the tread. All flanges are welded to the tread surface on the underside. All outside edges are ground smooth and flush for a virtually seamless appearance. All steel and aluminum plate used in the fabrication of welded treads is 3/16" thick.

Baluster heads are machined to the radius and pitch of the handrail, which is cold formed and stress relieved. Balusters are fastened to metal pipe rails with allen socket cap screws which have been countersunk into the back of the baluster. Hardwood rails are similarly fastened with wood screws, and flat bar rails are fastened from above through the rail into the baluster with flat head machine screws.
